What is Transverse Myelitis?

Transverse Myelitis (TM) is a term used by neurologists to describe inflammation of the spinal cord with no clear cause. This inflammation damages the myelin — the protective sheath surrounding nerve fibers — disrupting the transmission of nerve signals below the affected area. TM is believed to be the result of an autoimmune response, potentially triggered by an underlying immune-related condition or, in some cases, a vaccination. Symptoms can vary widely and appear unpredictably, while recovery tends to be slow and may not be complete. TM can affect individuals of any age, with approximately 200 new cases reported each year in the UK.
