We are always saying we wish there was more research into treatment or prevention of TM, ADEM and NMO. Now a consortium of charities and medical professionals interested in spinal injury have joined together to find out what PATIENTS think are the right priorities for research in the area of spinal cord injury, whether caused by trauma (accidents) or by other causes like autoimmunity as in TM, ADEM and NMO. Patients are surveyed for what they think are the priorities for researchThe James Lind Alliance, who has organised and chairs the partnership, works with the Royal Society of Medicine and NHS and has carried out similar exercises for other conditions including asthma, prostate cancer and tinnitus. Patients are asked to do a short survey about where they think researchers should concentrate and based on the information from that survey, a Top 10 Priority List for researchers will be drawn up early in 2014. There is a good track record of these priorities being picked up for investigation. Using this method, patient priorities can drive research instead of financial considerations. There is more information on the Spinal Cord Injury Partnership Priority Setting Partnership (SCI PSP) website if you are interested in the organisational aspects of this study. The SurveyThe survey itself is just one page long and it will only take you minutes to complete. It takes the form of asking you for your 'unanswered questions'. For example, you could ask 'Why do people with TM keep getting recurrences?' or perhaps 'Which non-drug therapies are most effective for neuropathic pain?'.
